Energy-Saving Tips

  • Trees: Plant leafy trees on the sunny side of your house. During the summer they provide shade, and in the winter they will shed their leaves to let the sun shine through.
  • Curtains: >Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day in the summer and open blinds on sunny winter days.
  • Walls: Paint the walls a light colour in areas you want to be bright instead of using more lights.
  • Dimmers: Dimmer switches are an inexpensive way to save energy.
  • Lamps: Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use 75% less electricity and last years longer than halogen bulbs.
  • Thermostat: Install a programmable thermostat with a built-in timer. Lower the heat by a few degrees at night and turn off the air conditioner or furnace when you're not home.
  • Rugs: Use area rugs on cold floors — if your feet are cold, your body will feel cold.
  • TVs: Unplug infrequently used TVs, they use energy even when turned off.
